What happens if I enter a Debt Management Plan?
The 'Soft' Insolvency.
A Debt Management Plan (DMP) is not legally binding. It is a handshake agreement between you and your creditors (usually managed by a charity like StepChange). You pay the charity one monthly payment, and they share it out. It is great for stopping stress, but bad for your credit file.
1 The Typical Timeline
If you take no action, this is the standard statutory process. Timescales are approximate but typical for 2026.
Budget Approval
You submit your budget to a DMP provider. They agree a monthly payment (e.g., £100/month).
Default Notices
This is scary but normal. Creditors MUST issue a Default Notice before they can accept the lower payments formally. This marks your credit file.
Silence
Once the Defaults are registered, existing interest is usually frozen, and the letters stop. You just pay the monthly fee.

When will you be debt free?
Will it stop bailiffs?
No. A DMP is inclusive, not protective. If you have Council Tax arrears, a DMP cannot stop the council from using bailiffs. You must deal with priority debts SEPARATELY.
The 6-Year Rule
A DMP usually lasts until the debt is paid off. BUT the damage to your credit file (the Defaults) drops off after 6 years. Even if you are still paying the DMP in year 7, your credit file might look clean.
Summary of Options
Choose a Free Provider
NEVER pay for a DMP. Companies like 'Gregory Pennington' take a cut. StepChange or PayPlan do it for FREE.
Review Yearly
If your income goes up, they will expect you to pay more. If it goes down, you can lower payments.
Common Questions
Can I still get a mortgage?
Not while you are in a DMP, and usually not for 3-6 years after it finishes.
Is it public?
No. Unlike an IVA or Bankruptcy, a DMP is not listed on the insolvency register. Your neighbors won't know.

What happens if I miss a Credit Card payment?
Missing a credit card payment triggers a snowball of interest and fees. If ignored for 3-6 months, specific markers like 'Defaults' are added to your credit file, preventing you from getting mortgages or loans for 6 years.
What happens if I ignore debt collectors?
Debt collectors are NOT bailiffs. They have no special power to enter your home or take goods. But ignoring them can lead to a CCJ, which is serious.
What happens 30 days after a CCJ?
The first 30 days after a County Court Judgment (CCJ) are critical. If you pay in full within this window, the CCJ is removed from your record entirely. If you miss it, the damage lasts for 6 years.
